Located just a block from the Lenin Statue, the Fremont Rocket is another relic from the Cold War era. The framework of the Fremont Rocket comes from a non-nuclear rocket built in Russia during the 1950s. The rocket made its way to Seattle, where local artists rescued it from a defunct surplus shop in Belltown. The artists decorated the rocket with metalwork, neon, and paint. The Fremont Rocket was erected amidst pomp and circumstance at the Center of the Universe in 1994. At regular intervals the nozzles ooze clouds of vapor. (--MD) |
